Best PMR Results in Four Years

Thursday, December 23, 2010
PUTRAJAYA: A total of 30,863 out of 439,456 candidates scored straight As in the 2010 Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination, an increase of 2,675 students from last year, making this the best PMR results in four years.

Although there were fewer candidates this year, compared to last year at 442,721, more students scored straight As and passed the exam by obtaining a minimum Grade D.

Citing hard work by students and schools as one of the reasons contributing to this year’s better results, Education director-general Datuk Abdul Ghafar Mahmud said the Gred Purata Nasional (GPN) has improved from 2.78 last year to 2.74 this year. (Lower, the better)

The gap between the performance between urban and rural students also narrowed with 5,825 rural students scoring straight As, compared to 4,775 last year.

However, this year saw a slight drop in the performance of students with special needs.

Only five out of the 1,345 candidates with special needs scored straight As, compared to seven out of 1,188 students last year.

When asked about the slight decline in the performance of the special kids, Abdul Ghafar said the exam questions might have been slightly tougher this year.

“We will conduct an analysis to look into the possible causes of the small drop as well as ways to help them,” he said after announcing the 2010 PMR results analysis here Thursday.

Abdul Ghafar said six subjects showed a significant increase in the Gred Purata Mata Pelajaran (GPMP), namely Bahasa Malaysia, English, Arabic, Mathematics, Science and Living Skills (agriculture).

However, he said the ministry would not announce the names of the top schools and students.

“It is to avoid competition and putting pressure on schools,” he said.
