Red Devils extend unbeaten record thanks to two moments of brilliance

By Phil Haigh

Manchester United's unbeaten record still remains but so does their 'unconvinceables' tag, as Sir Alex Ferguson's side failed once again to fire on all cylinders against a resilient opposition.

Javier Hernandez rounded off a fine move to put the hosts ahead but after the interval, United's exhibited another defensive lapse, which has been all too frequent this term, and allowed Dean Whitehead to equalise.

Nani, returning from injury, was United's saviour twelve minutes later with an excellent strike but Ferguson's men continue to ride their luck after obtaining another three points through a stuttering display.

The game started fairly even as the six changes to United's line-up seemed to disrupt their rhythm, while Stoke showed they weren’t afraid to attack with the likes of Matthew Etherington and Tuncay willing to spring forward at the earliest opportunity.

Few chances emerged in the first fifteen minutes, as the final ball let United down on several occasions. However, it was clear Stoke City's attacking threat was going to be short-lived, as they quickly left all the forward-thinking football to the hosts.

Darron Gibson showed he was in his usual shoot-on-sight mood in a rare start, as he flashed a shot over the bar from range which was as close as anyone came in the opening exchanges.

United began to impress their superior quality by maintaining possession more effectively, but they still created very little until the 27th minute when a moment of brilliance broke the deadlock.

Dimitar Berbatov played the ball out to Nani, who had far too much time to pick out his man in the middle, which he did to perfection. Hernandez was making a dart to the near post and met the cross with a beautiful back-heel flick which Asmir Begovic, in the Stoke goal, clearly was not expecting as it beat him at his near post.

But United once again showed an inability to replicate their old trait of being able to kill off teams before the half-time whistle, as they failed to press for a second goal.

By the 37th minute, it was a Nani-Hernandez combination that saw United come close to doubling their lead.

The Portuguese winger nodded the ball back across the danger area which again was met by the Mexican but his shot blazed over the bar.

As the first half came to the close, it appeared to be a performance typical of United this season. The hosts had not been able to dominate the game but the lack of adventure shown by Stoke made it all the more easier.

The second half started much the same as the first had finished - Manchester United weren’t entirely taking the game to Stoke, but looked comfortable.

That was until five minutes after the interval, when Tuncay picked up the ball on the left flank and was allowed to put a cross in at his leisure. Whitehead who had made a burst into the box, got the better of Vidic, and nodded home.

Stoke, buoyed by this goal against the run of play, started to show an assertive presence in an attempt to rattle United further.

But up stepped Nani 12 minutes later to become United's latest hero, as the Portuguese winger knocked the ball out of his feet to give himself half a yard before curling his effort into the far corner, which left Begovic with no chance.

It was another moment of fantastic quality from United which made the difference between the sides.

Stoke looked to get back on level ground by bringing on Jon Walters and Jermaine Pennant for Etherington and Rory Delap, but it was United who continued to attack as Gibson broke down the right leading to a handball shout in the Stoke box.

Whether it was the substitutions or the weariness of Stoke, United were very comfortable for the rest of the game as they continued to hold on to possession and had a significant territory advantage as well.

Michael Owen was brought on for his first appearance since October, but on the basis of Hernandez's influential display, the 31-year-old may have a tough job of displacing the Mexican.

The win, which may cause concern, as well as relief for Ferguson puts United three points clear of Manchester City, while Stoke remain in eighth place.

Dan Kgothule must resign - DA

Tuesday, January 4, 2011

The Democratic Alliance (DA) believes that Free State MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Dan Kgothule, needs to resign immediately from the provincial cabinet, after the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court yesterday found him guilty of reckless and negligent driving, for speeding at 235 km/h during the festive season.

Minister of Transport, S'bu Ndebele, should be leading the charge for Mr. Kgothule's resignation. He has set a terrible example, and there can be no excuse for this sort of behaviour, especially from an elected representative.

There has been a trend of public officials found guilty of crimes not facing any real consequence and continuing to draw salaries from the public purse. This must come to an end. For example, the following high-ranking ANC officials were found guilty of traffic offences and still hold office:

* Enoch Gondongwana, Deputy Minister of Economic Development, was convicted in 2001 of drunken driving, while twice over the legal limit. He also refused to undergo a breathalyser test.
* Playfair Morule, Mayor of Mangaung Municipality, was convicted of culpable homicide in 2008 for a hit-and-run which resulted in the death of a 21-year-old woman.
* Jackson Mthembu, current ANC national spokesperson, was convicted of drunken driving in the Wynberg magistrate's court last year.

At the beginning of the festive season the Minister of Transport declared that:

"We want to repeat that absolutely no mercy will be shown to traffic offenders as we head towards 2011. South Africa's 'Make Roads Safe' campaign is leading up to the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety from 2011 to 2020, with the key aim of drastically reducing road deaths around the world."

We agree with the Minister's sentiments, and believe this is precisely why the MEC needs to stand down, or alternatively why his party's leadership should be holding him to account for his actions, and requiring that he leaves his position.

Nik Aziz and Hadi deny unity govt talks with King

KOTA BARU: PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and party spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat have quashed speculation that they discussed the issue of a unity government with Umno with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Abdul Hadi said he and Nik Aziz attended a banquet hosted by Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin at Istana Terengganu in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 24.

He dismissed speculation that the Malay unity matter was discussed with the King.

“Right after the meeting, I left for England to launch a PAS supporters club in Manchester.

“And that is all there is to it,” he said at a press conference at JKR 10, the official residence of the Kelantan Mentri Besar here yesterday.

PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustapa Ali was present.

In a statement read out at the press conference, Nik Aziz said on Dec 20, former prime minister Tun Abdullah Badawi had visited him at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian and extended an invitation on behalf of the King to attend the royal dinner.

“Abdullah said Tuanku Mizan had asked for Datuk Seri Hadi Awang and me to attend the dinner at the palace.

“It would be unethical and impolite for me to tell what transpired during the conversation I had with Tuanku Mizan,” the Kelantan Mentri Besar said.

Nik Aziz appealed to the media to stop making their own assumptions or statements about the meeting to safeguard the honour and good name of the palace.

Taylor Swift beats Susan Boyle to US Christmas top spot

Thursday, December 23, 2010
British singer Susan Boyle has missed out on a second consecutive US Christmas number one album after her second record was knocked off the top of the Billboard chart by Taylor Swift.

Boyle's The Gift sold 254,000 copies last week while Swift's Speak Now shifted 259,000

Swift's Speak Now returned to the top of the countdown after selling 5,000 more copies than Boyle's The Gift.

Michael Jackson's posthumously released album Michael made its debut in third place, having sold 228,000 copies.

Swift also beat Boyle to the US best-selling album accolade in 2009.

Eminem's Recovery was 2010's biggest seller with US sales of 3.2 million.

Record company Epic had hoped Jackson's album would fare better in the US, projecting first week sales of 400,000.

Yet the record performed better overseas, topping the chart in Germany, Italy, Sweden and the Netherlands.

This is the third time Swift, 21, has topped the Billboard chart since Speak Now's release in October.

The country singer's biggest-selling US album of 2009, Fearless, was originally released in 2008.

In November, Boyle's second album topped the UK and US charts less than 12 months after her debut achieved the same chart position, a feat matched by The Beatles and The Monkees.
